Provider
In short: A vendor that provides access to a service — in an IT context, usually an internet service provider (ISP) that delivers internet access.
In more detail: The term is used more broadly: hosting providers provide server space, cloud providers (e.g. Vercel, AWS) entire infrastructure, domain providers/registrars manage domain registrations. What they all have in common is providing technical infrastructure that customers use instead of running it themselves.
In Depth
Different provider types at a glance:
- Internet service provider (ISP): delivers physical internet access (DSL, fibre, mobile) — e.g. Telekom, Vodafone.
- Hosting provider: provides server capacity for websites/applications, from classic shared hosting to fully managed platforms.
- Cloud provider: offers scalable infrastructure on demand (compute, storage, databases), usually billed by actual usage — e.g. AWS, Google Cloud, Vercel.
- Domain registrar: manages domain name registration with the responsible registry.
- Email provider: provides mailboxes and mail-sending infrastructure.
The overarching trend in recent years has moved from “Infrastructure as a Service” (you only rent raw servers, managing the operating system and software yourself) to “Platform as a Service” (the provider also handles the operating system, scaling, deployment) — Emzett itself, for example, runs entirely on Vercel as a PaaS, instead of administering its own servers.
