Data Management
In short: The systematic collection, storage, maintenance and protection of data throughout its entire lifecycle.
In more detail: Covers, among other things, data modelling, backup strategies, access rights, archiving, and compliance with legal requirements (e.g. GDPR). The goal is for data to be correct, available, and protected against loss or unauthorised access.
In Depth
Data management covers the entire lifecycle of data, not just pure storage:
- Collection: how data gets into the system at all (e.g. form input, API imports).
- Storage/modelling: in what structure data is stored, e.g. relationally in an SQL database or document-based.
- Access control: who’s allowed to read/change which data, often represented via roles and permissions.
- Backup and recovery: regular backups that allow recovery in an emergency (hardware failure, accidental deletion, attack).
- Archiving: long-term storage of rarely needed but still relevant data, often on cheaper, slower storage.
- Deletion: defined deadlines and processes for correctly removing data at the end of its lifecycle (and, for personal data, GDPR-compliantly).
Good data management is a prerequisite for compliance: the GDPR requires, among other things, that companies can trace at any time which personal data they’ve stored about whom, and can export or delete it on request.
